Leave Nagoya by train and bus for Magome and Tsumago, two beautifully preserved Edo-era post towns. A licensed English-speaking guide leads a 3.3-kilometer Nakasendo walk past waterfalls, forest, and old inns. Small groups of up to seven make the day personal, but you need moderate fitness.
“A great day out. If you do the full walk from the start then it’s a long walk and the first part is uphill. We got a bus to the waterfall and then walked down hill. The villages at the start and the end were excellent. We were also lucky to have an excellent guide in Yama San.”
Travel by air-conditioned vehicle from Nagoya to Gujo Hachiman, Takayama, and World Heritage Shirakawa-go. You’ll have about one hour, two hours, and 90 minutes at the stops, with free time to explore and buy lunch. Expect simple English guidance rather than a full sightseeing commentary.
