Driving a go-kart through central Tokyo is about as far from ordinary sightseeing as you can get. You suit up in a cartoon costume, follow your guide through city traffic, and pass landmarks that usually blur past a taxi window. Akihabara and Tokyo Skytree give the ride its biggest visual moments.

I like the careful safety briefing and the way the guide keeps the group together. I also like that photos are taken for you, with digital images and a hard-copy printed photo included, so you can concentrate on driving instead of reaching for a camera.

The main catch is serious: you need the correct paper IDP before leaving home. Japan does not accept online permits, digital copies, or permits based on the 1968 Vienna Convention. If your paperwork is wrong, you cannot drive.
